Description

Los Angeles-based artist Mark Licari technically inhabits the same world as the rest of us, but when contemplating one of his drawings it can be hard to tell. His landscapes and interiors are populated
by a litany of animal and botanical denizens forming an eccentric variation on the familiar natural world. Anthropomorphic appliances break, explode and spew their mushy contents all over the walls and ground, both inside the pictures and, in the cases of murals, into the surrounding spaces. Civilization is overrun by rampant nature and one gets the distinct impression that Licari thinks this state of affairs is a hoot. He’s worried, sure, but the joviality and optimism of the work wins out. This extemporaneous and playful nature is particularly evident when it comes to Licari’s site-specific wall drawings, such as the one he will create at MOCA.
